The town of Hersonissos or Port of Hersonissos, as it is its official name, was, until the late 60s, nothing more than a humble fishing village. Today, it is a worldwide known resort, synonymous to easy-going life and endless fun. Indeed, with its perfect climate, crystal waters, position, the high standards of its hotels, its vibrant market and notorious nightlife, Hersonissos, has earned a fair place between the top Mediterranean and Greek summer destinations. But the other side of Hersonissos, which is its mainland, is still less acknowledged: it includes many historical monuments and landscapes of exceptional beauty that await to be discovered.
Hersonissos is located 26 km away from Heraklion heading east. It is extended across a long sea front at the edge of a green valley full of olive trees.On the south it is surrounded by some picturesque hills where are found three worth visiting traditional settlements: Koutouloufari, Piskopiano and Old Hersonissos.A bit further, in direction southeast the Dikti Massif embraces Hersonissos area with its astonishing mountainsides.
