Hersonissos Guide

The town of Hersonissos or Port of Hersonissos, as it is its official name, was, until the late 60s, nothing more than a humble fishing village. Today, it is a worldwide known resort, synonymous to easy-going life and endless fun. Indeed, with its perfect climate, crystal waters, position, the high standards of its hotels, its vibrant market and notorious nightlife, Hersonissos, has earned a fair place between the top Mediterranean and Greek summer destinations. But the other side of Hersonissos, which is its mainland, is still less acknowledged: it includes many historical monuments and landscapes of exceptional beauty that await to be discovered.

Hersonissos is located 26 km away from Heraklion heading east. It is extended across a long sea front at the edge of a green valley full of olive trees. On the south it is surrounded by some picturesque hills where are found three worth visiting traditional settlements: Koutouloufari, Piskopiano and Old Hersonissos.A bit further, in direction southeast the Dikti Massif embraces Hersonissos area with its astonishing mountainsides.

While on holidays in Hersonissos, visitors may enjoy the organized tourist installations of the north and also escape by taking routes to the south and walks in forgotten ancient paths and in the villages in the root of Dikti like Avdou,Potamies and others. In Hersonissos, there are activities for everyone: for sport lovers: (sea sports, golf, mountain bikes, hiking), for children (playgrounds, animal farms) and for the lovers of gastronomy and wine a wide selection of quality restaurants.

The coast of Hersonissos includes many small bays and beaches naturally protected from the northern and west- northern wind, the Port with its Roman and Byzantine antiquities and a long street across the sea full of restaurants, cafés and clubs. The commercial life of the town is gathered in the main street (E Venizelou), which traverses the whole settlement from west to east.
